CANON: No More Heroes
CANON POINT: Post No More Heroes 3
AGE: 30
BACKGROUND: Here!
PERSONALITY:
Shinobu is a character that has actually gone through quite a bit of character development just from the first game to the next, but then goes through even more in the spin-off. In the first game, while she has a cool, more reserved personality (particularly compared to other assassins in the game), her personality almost does a complete 180 just from seeing Travis' weapon before their fight. Granted, she mistakenly believes that same weapon killed her father, but the point is that in the first game, she isn't quite as stoic as she might first appear to be.
By the second game, however, Shinobu seems to be a lot more relaxed than she appeared in the previous one. She remains calm through a bit of a disagreement with a woman she doesn't like, being provoked by two different assassins, and even having her romantic advances rejected. This continues in Travis Strikes Again, as she just seems mildly annoyed at being stuck in a video game, even though she really hates video games.
The series never really spells out why she calmed down so much, but my best guess was due to being humbled by her first loss as well as getting an arm cut off in the process (and would have normally died as a result of it, if not for Travis' bleeding heart), and thus leaving the US for Japan to work on herself. As a good part of the reason she lost to Travis was because she lost her cool, she needed to learn to harness her emotions better. This is probably when she educated herself better on the code of bushido, as a part of that is being disciplined enough to constrain your emotions. The other part is, well. Going from age 18 to 21 (and later, 28) might have been enough time to mature on an emotional note too.
While her anger management was probably the most noticeable change, another aspect of hers that has changed is that she also seemed to develop a better handle on her massive ego. In the first game, her boss fight is notoriously difficult, but her one real weakness in that fight is that she'll leave herself wide open for attacks by pausing to taunt Travis constantly. By the second game, though, she has more of a reason to be full of herself (as she's now a more prestigious assassin, being the top ranked in Asia), but yet she tells Sylvia that while she's confident in her abilities, she's not over-confident. This is further proven after a fight in which she chastises herself for leaving herself open to getting put in a hold (which led to her ripping her own prosthetic arm off to get out of), even if her quick thinking was probably what won her the fight. This shows that Shinobu is absolutely at least self-critical of herself and her abilities, even if she is still pretty full of herself (even as a playable character if you do too big of a combo, she will stop and taunt her opponent still). However, in Travis Strikes Again, that weakness doesn’t seem to exist anymore, so perhaps she’s even more grounded now.
Another aspect is that Shinobu has an intense sense of loyalty, as well as a strange sense of honor, which serves as a motivator in her actions. While she's pretty pissed at Travis after their fight for not killing her (as it's considered an act of dishonor to not directly kill your opponent in an assassin match), she still comes out of nowhere later in the game to save him and leaves without muttering a word. The circumstances are frustratingly vague, but perhaps it's her way of paying him back for sparing her life.
This loyalty is still present from there on out, when a conversation explains that Shinobu abruptly ended her time abroad in Asia because of some promise Sylvia presented to her, but also because she wanted to help her "Master", Travis, in speeding his ascent through the rankings by killing two assassins on his behalf. Though she might have gotten a little too attached in the second game (to the point that it freaked Travis out a little), by Travis Strikes Again, she’s seemingly independent enough to be able to do her own thing to not get too unhealthily attached.
Controversially, though, Shinobu seems to have little problem in following orders from others, even if she doesn't particularly respect them. In the second game, it's obvious that she really doesn't like Sylvia at all (as she believes the other woman can't see herself objectively and there was probably a bit of jealousy on the Travis front too). However, in spite of saying that she wouldn't even be "worth the stain on [her] blade", Shinobu has no objections to the orders she gives her. So, I think it's safe to assume that as long as she's getting something she wants, Shinobu is entirely compliant of orders given to her, even if she might get a little sassy in the process. It'll just go a whole lot more smoother if she respects the person in the first place.
The most major change Shinobu goes through during the third game she’s in, is that she’s seemingly gotten a little less murky in her morals. While she killed three innocent students in the first game, just for overhearing a conversation that implicated her as an assassin without the least bit of remorse, it would seem unlikely she’d do anything like that again, ten years later. In fact, it’s revealed that she now runs a dojo for kids in the ghetto, hoping that she can make their lives a little better. However, she is still proud to be an assassin, if only because she can kill the bad people of her world, and then use the blood money to fund her dojo. Even if she still hopes those kids never see what she actually does.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
KATANA SKILLS
-Gentōken -- Shinobu can charge up her sword to unleash a blast of energy that can attack enemies from long distances.
-Apparently has enough strength to decapitate enemies.
-Somehow, she's also capable of blocking gunfire with her blade.
-Was the daughter of someone considered a master swordsman, and her grandfather was a co-instructor in some form of assassination, so it's probably safe to assume that she's extremely competent in the art of the blade, in general. To support this, even with an artificial arm, she seemingly has no setbacks in using her katana. Even when she rips off that said artificial arm (it was to escape a hold, okay), she still has no issues in using it with her seemingly less dominant hand.
AGILITY
-Can jump very high and flip over a person’s head in spite of not being any more than five feet flat herself (not including high heels)
-Seems to be very good at parkour, able to kick herself off of a building while in air gracefully.
-Shinobu can also do a diving attack with her katana.
-She's really fast, seemingly capable of flash stepping during combat.
-She can somehow lodge her sword into a person and spin on the handle to drill it in more. I don't even know, it makes no goddamned sense. The point is, she's stupidly good with the agility thing.
BIONIC ARM
-It's not clearly explained what exactly it's capable of, in canon, but she ripped a guy's robotic appendage off with ease, seemingly using no effort at all. So it's likely that it enhances her strength in her right arm.
-But it can also be ripped off fairly easily if someone also has some sort of enhanced strength.
-In addition to this, it seems like it has the ability to negate electricity -- Destroyman attempted to shock her through a handshake, but it didn't seem to have any effect on her. "Was this supposed to 'spark'? Lame."
OTHER
- She can fight in high heels. She's so short that she wears that shit in BATTLE.
- Can speak both English and Japanese.
- Is knowledgeable enough in martial arts and bushido to the extent of being able to teach it to even children.
INVENTORY:
Her katana, along with its scabbard and a whetstone to sharpen the blade. Also, a tube of lipstick in the pale purple shade she likes.
